Communications Officer

This is presented as a full-time position but we are open to freelancers and part-time equivalents.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic communications expert to join one of the UK's most exciting new PR agencies.​

 

The primary responsibilities will be to assist in delivering our clients’ media relations and digital communications. You will begin to understand and promote political positions and policy; help build credibility with journalists and commentators; and work quickly and accurately under pressure. 

​

You will contribute to identifying and securing meaningful press, media and digital coverage for our roster of clients.
 
We see our clients as our friends, so you must be the type of person who is ready to totally dedicate yourself to getting the best for your clients, no matter what. In other words, that means this job will often require working unsociable and out of office hours. Workloads may be stressful, but always rewarding!​

Key responsibilities include:​

  • Contributing to meetings, creative brainstorms and discussions

  • Research & reports

  • Social media management

  • Drafting of reactive lines to breaking news and issues of the day

  • Identifying issues that get cut through in media and build proactive stories to generate media coverage

  • Produce pro-active media initiatives

  • Alerting clients and staff to significant news stories

  • Seeking opportunities for and filling broadcasting bids for radio, television, newspapers and online media

  • Drafting articles for clients

  • Working with other staff to ensure clients are fully briefed before media appearances

  • Developing a professional working relationship with relevant journalists

  • Representing the views and outlook of clients to journalists

  • Maintaining an up to date distribution list for journalists, third party groups and other stakeholders

  • Working with other staff and clients to develop and implement a media strategy

  • Maintaining an overview and awareness of political and policy developments in areas relevant to clients

  • Other duties to assist the wider team and directors as required, including business, administrative and personal assistant support

You must be:

  • A strong communicator, especially in writing

  • At ease with large and often unpredictable workloads with a good temperament that allows you to deal with the unexpected

  • Able to extract information from public organisations and Government reports

  • Well organised and keen to prove yourself in a challenging and unpredictable environment

  • Able to show a willingness to innovate, experiment, and share best practice

  • Always thinking of new and unique ways to make headlines and gain coverage for our clients and their work

  • A team player with a flexible and dedicated approach to your work

  • Able to demonstrate a good handling of the main social media platforms

  • Experienced at using Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Google Docs / Drive etc.

We would love for you also to have: (but this is not essential!)

  • Contacts in the PR, media, magazine, broadsheet, TV news and tabloid industry

  • Experience working across digital campaigns, video promotion and print marketing.

  • A good level of creative skill

  • Experience using Adobe Suite.

  • Experience using Mailchimp, Nationbuilder, Kantar, Connect, Forward Planner or other similar systems.

The successful candidate will receive:

  • A salary of £19,000 – £23,000

  • 30 days annual leave, including bank holidays and birthdays.

  • Ability to work remotely.

  • Time off in lieu.

  • Pension contributions.

  • The role will require extensive work with public figures and politicians from the UK Liberal Democrat party, as well as other left-leaning political parties, politicians, campaigns and movements across the UK, Europe and the US. You do not need to be a member of the Liberal Democrats but you must sympathise with the aims and values of the Liberal Democrats, pro-European ideology and generally left-leaning views. You should have sound political judgement and an understanding of the current political climate in the UK and Europe.​
